WHAT WILL PEOPLE THINK, 2024
Site-specific installation at Alt-Temphelhof metro station, Berlin With Ventana Project
Located at Alt-Tempelhof U-Bahn station, this installation transforms an intimate question into a public act of reflection. In an increasingly uncertain future, where collective connections become essential, it invites us to question social pressures and imagine new forms of authenticity and shared belonging.
What Will People Think? is a work by @esra that accrues greater intensity and is amplified when situated within public spaces, such as, in this instance, the Berlin subway.
Having been raised in a profoundly conservative environment, the artist seeks to confront societal constraints, actively resisting repressive norms and expectations. Through her work, Gülmen aspires to inspire individuals to reclaim their personal freedom, encouraging them to transcend external judgments and embrace authenticity.
The piece intertwines a question that frequently emerges in our inner dialogues with a universal and evocative image that speaks to the essence of our time and existence.
In a mode of visual speculation, @esra's installation, developed in collaboration with Ventana Project, presents a provocative invitation to take a breath and contemplate the idea of both a personal and collective future, prompting us to consider the extent to which that future may already be manifest in the present.
